Abstract

Advances in digital technology post-COVID-19 have driven educational institutions to adopt combined in-person and online learning models. Although "blended learning" and "hybrid learning" are often used interchangeably, they possess distinct conceptual emphases. This article examines the definitions, characteristics, similarities, and differences between the two models, alongside their benefits, challenges, and current trends in higher education. Using a narrative literature review approach, this study analyzed peer-reviewed publications from 2020 to 2026 sourced from Scopus and Web of Science. The findings indicate that blended learning is predominantly student-centered, maintaining face-to-face instruction as its core, whereas hybrid learning emphasizes the instructor's role in managing simultaneous or parallel in-person and online sessions. While both models enhance learning flexibility, student autonomy, and academic performance, they encounter challenges including the digital divide, instructor readiness, and complex classroom management. These findings assist higher education institutions in formulating policy frameworks that clearly distinguish both models to optimize instructional design, faculty training, and quality assurance.
